Apple Seed is an inquiry–based program that emphasizes raising the level of critical thinking among students and sharpening their powers of observation.
Apple Seed includes hand-on activities that integrate science learning with reading, mathematics, writing, cultural history, geography, and artistic expression. The
Apple Seed curriculum is based on the
National Science Education Standards.
HSNY provides the
Apple Seed program to underserved public schools, in the classroom and as part of after-school programs.
Apple Seed lessons take place in beautiful gardens installed by students with the help of HSNY education staff and their teachers, or include visits to HSNY’s
GreenBranches gardens and to sites like local community or botanic gardens and green markets. Through these garden visits, the children learn to observe, question, and actively improve their immediate environment and neighborhoods.
Apple Seed's curriculum is the basis for our summer learning program,
Read & Seed, which takes place in our
GreenBranches gardens.
